Course Objectives

Measure of Performance for Evaluation of Designs
Instruction Set Architecture: Start-Point of a CPU Design
Computer Arithmetic and ALU: Central Part of a CPU
Process Design: Data Path and Control Unit
Pipelining: Advanced Design Technologies
Memory Subsystems: Interfacing Memory to CPU
Input/Output subsystems: Interfacing I/O to CPU

Required Backgrounds

Knowledge of a high-level language and data structure
Understanding of assembly language programming: opcodes, operands, etc.
Boolean logic design techniques (Realization of boolean functions using AND, OR, NOT, XOR, NAND, NOR gates and appropriate minimization techniques; Logic building blocks: flip-flops, multiplexors, decoders, shift registers)

Borderline cases will be resolved by student participation in class providing intelligent questions, informative comments, and constructive criticisms.

Course Policy

Students are required to attend all lectures.
No late homework submission.
No make-up examinations.
